The groundhog has spoken. And it's bad news. Punxsutawney (puhnk-suh-TAW'-nee) Phil has emerged to see his shadow before chilly revelers in Pennsylvania, meaning winter will last another six weeks.

German tradition holds that if a hibernating animal sees its shadow on Feb. 2 — the Christian holiday of Candlemas — winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says spring will come early.

The Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club annually announces Phil's forecast at dawn on Gobbler's Knob, about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Phil's announcement came before hundreds of onlookers who huddled as temperatures hovered in the teens. The Groundhog Club says since 1887 Phil has predicted more winter weather by seeing his shadow nearly 100 times, but there are no records for nine years.

this is an awsome article and i like ground hogs.that day was americas moment of truth and it looks like we are having six more weeks of winter

I don't really believe that if the groundhog does come out it will mean spring will come early. How could one animal tell you spring comes early.

I wish that he would not see his shadow and let us have spring. I can't believe that he saw his shadow 100 times and just go's back into his hole. People probably scare the ground hog so that's why it hides. I wish he would just not see his shadow.

Ok either way if the groundhog sees or doesnt see his shadow we still have to wait for winter to be over until march 21st for spring to start. Anyways i heard that they pull out the groundhog on purpose.

the groundhog has seen his shadow it was perfect day to see his shadow and spoken i know it was a perfect day in ohio

Winter for 6 more weeks, I think I can handle that. The one thing I know about Phil is on Feb. 2nd there will be still be 6 more weeks of winter even if Phil doesn't see his shadow. Most of the time he sees his shadow because of the light of the cameras and video tapers.
