Grow up right. Read each night.
First lady Michelle Obama celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday Tuesday by reading "The Cat in the Hat" to a group of children wearing red-and-white-striped stovepipe hats like the book's main character. The event marked the day that Dr. Seuss, or Theodor Seuss Geisel, would have turned 106.
"Do you know the president of the United States reads all the time," Mrs. Obama told a group of more than 200 students from elementary schools in Washington and Arlington, Va. "Our girls at home read every single night."
The first lady said that her daughters, Sasha and Malia, are allowed to stay up 30 minutes later if they are reading.
Some of the first family's favorite children's books are "Horton Hatches the Egg," by Dr. Seuss and "Where the Wild Things Are," by Maurice Sendak, Mrs. Obama said in response to one of the children's questions.
NEA President Dennis Van Roekel led the children in a rhyming pledge to read every day. It began: "I promise to read each day and each night. I know it's the key to growing up right."
On Monday President Barack Obama proclaimed March 2 Read Across America Day.

I love this message and completely agree with it. Although not all books are good to be reading (that is completely opinionated) I think it is a great idea to read every night, especially the idea to add and extra thirty minutes to bed time if you are reading, that's really clever! I love all the things Mrs. Obama is doing for our countries youth and I really hope she continues.
This is a great thing for kids to do all around the world. Reading every night is a must do in every family household or learning something new. I like the Dr. Seuss books, too.
I really support Dennis Van Roekel, the NEA President, for having the children say how good reading is. Just like the Obama's let Sasha and Malia stay up later if they are reading, my parents let me stay up as late as I want as long as I'm reading. I'm very thankful for it because it has introduced me to different writing styles and new words that I still use today; reading as a child has had a huge impact on my education. I wish that all children had the opportunity to talk with an influential person like Michelle Obama about why reading is so important. I feel that if the next generation of children gets a good reading foundation early on, they will have an easier time learning and will enjoy reading more, at that. Reading can only be a good thing because there's no down side to education.
I love to read every minute I can. If I didn't read than I wouldn't know some of the stuff that I know now. Reading puts my mind at ease and it helps me forget some of the problems I have at school or at home.
I think this is really nice that she takes the time to read to children. The neat thing it that kids wear red and white in honor of Dr. Seuss Mrs. Obama made a good choice.
Reading is very important. First you start little or if you want to step it up its ok, and it means everthing to. Like what you do in your life or if you play a new sport its ok if you mess up juststart small.
