Grow up right. Read each night. First lady Michelle Obama celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday Tuesday by reading "The Cat in the Hat" to a group of children wearing red-and-white-striped stovepipe hats like the book's main character. The event marked the day that Dr. Seuss, or Theodor Seuss Geisel, would have turned 106.

"Do you know the president of the United States reads all the time," Mrs. Obama told a group of more than 200 students from elementary schools in Washington and Arlington, Va. "Our girls at home read every single night."

The first lady said that her daughters, Sasha and Malia, are allowed to stay up 30 minutes later if they are reading.

Some of the first family's favorite children's books are "Horton Hatches the Egg," by Dr. Seuss and "Where the Wild Things Are," by Maurice Sendak, Mrs. Obama said in response to one of the children's questions.

NEA President Dennis Van Roekel led the children in a rhyming pledge to read every day. It began: "I promise to read each day and each night. I know it's the key to growing up right."

On Monday President Barack Obama proclaimed March 2 Read Across America Day.

I like the idea that Miss.Obama went to Elementary schools and spent her time with kindergarten through 5th graders to read with them. What I really like is that Miss.Obama could have been in Washington with her husband, but instead she chose to read at Elementary schools, and if anybody ever came to my school and spent their time to read with me and my class I would really like that person a whole bunch.

I liked this article because Mrs. Obama wants children to read every night to get the education they need to get through in life. Reading is not my strongest subject but there are a lot of books i like. Reading helps with every thing and if you dont know how to read than you would not know anything.

I really like this article. I think that it was nice for the president's wife to read to kids. That is really a bis amount of kids she read, i wish i was one of them. I was also nice that Michelle to celebrate Dr.Seuss's birthday. i wonder what story she had read? This also improves you in reading. I hope that one day you will come to Texas. Anyways "Happy Birthday" Dr.Seuss!

I think that is pretty cool and that means me and the president of the United States have a lot in common I read every day not because i have to because I love reading but instead of being allowed 30 minutes extra if you are reading i stay awake until i finish the book or until I get too sleepy to keep my eyes open but instead of reading books from Dr.Sues and stuff like that I read novels ,huge novels (the average size is 400 pages) I guess you can call be an addict but i wouldn't mind cause i know i am.

I love to read. I think it is good that she is reading to them. She also did it because it it would have been Theoder Suess Geisel's 106 birthday.
