New York Pavements, 1924 or 1925:
Isolation, separateness, silence-such words are often used to describe the elusive mood evoked by Edward Hopper's works. Widely recognized today as "the major realist painter of mid-twentieth-century America" (Gail Levin), Hopper has long been famous for his hauntingly empty New York cityscapes and rural New England views, and his bleak interior scenes inhabited by solitary, introspective figures.

For some reason I really enjoy this picture. A couple things I noticed wen I first looked at it. The first is The nuns. When people think New York they don't automatically think nuns so maybe the artist its trying to fight a preconceived notion about New York. The second thing I noticed is the hurry in this picture. New York minute? Also in this picture you can tell that it wasn't anytime recently just from the sidewalk blocks and apartments. I always like looking at old art.
This picture is pretty interesting, even the nuns. I wonder what all the rush is about. The colors are interesting, too. Is it in the middle of the night?
The picture has a very good color and i wonder if there are good jobs or not. It has a good background, and they just put in a pavement road. I think that the picture should be put in in an art show - and that is all.
I like the city and the colors! The nuns seem to be in a hurry...I wonder what business is housed in this building. What year was this painted?
Amazing. This is so life like! The nun's hat is waving, and the columns are definitly painted perfectly. I just think he could have added a tree... you see those in NYC now, because the tree population is going down. But this painting was painted a while ago so it has to be before they put trees in. So, this painting is really realistic. I would have been honored to meet him. Amazing painting, Gail Levin!
I think this painting shows good perspective by the door way part of the building. I also think it is cool how they show the people.
