Snow forecast in Valdosta Saturday
VALDOSTA — A taste of wintry weather will be provided by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Library from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday.
The third annual Snow Day will give children a chance to experience the joys of snow, a very rare occurrence in South Georgia.
Two pallets of snow will be set up at the library, Jennifer Tyler, library children’s assistant, said.
One will be for children under 5, and one will be for children ages 6 to 12, she said.
“We will have targets set up for them to throw at so we don’t have the issue of them throwing it at each other,” Tyler said.
Hot cocoa and cookies will also be served.
“It’s a great environment for them to be able to socialize and spend time at the local library,” she said. The event is free to the public.
Since the weather fluctuates quickly across South Georgia, Tyler said the library is not sure exactly how cold or hot it will be on Saturday.
To stave off immediate melting of the snow, the event is being held in the afternoon to avoid the midday sun, Tyler said.
As of Tuesday, weather forecasts called for a high of 58 degrees, a low of 32 degrees, as well as a 30 percent chance of precipitation on Saturday.
Snow Day is sponsored by Adel Ice and Friends of the Library.
Snow Fun Facts
• The largest snowflake recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records fell at Fort Keogh, Mont. It was 15 inches wide and 8 inches thick.
• Scientists study snowflakes by spreading a chemical compound over a glass plate and waiting until a snowflake lands there. The compound immediately covers the snowflake and hardens. When the snowflake melts, it leaves behind a plastic case that shows its exact structure.
• When combined, windblown snow and black dirt make what is called snirt.
• A snow storm becomes a blizzard when visibility is under one-quarter mile and the storm continues for more than three hours with winds of 35 mph.
• Stampede Pass, Wash., averages 430 inches of snow per year. It’s known as the snow capital of the United States.

I think that the snow was pretty cool. I have never seen snow before. It was snowing while it was raining. The snow was rather cold. But It was fun I experienced some of the snow I was going to the basketball game at the school and I seen it coming down. I hope we can get some snow again some time soon. I wish I was in Atlanta or New York somewhere you will get a whole lot of it. And I could play in it and make snow angels. That would be hilarious. i would love to throw snowballs at people including my siblings. I mean how fun would that be to throw snow at each other. I don`t think we will ever get anymore snow. For one reason I don`t think it gets cold enough to snow alot. I mean that said t hat we was supposed to get at least 2 inches I don`t think we even got a 1/2 inch. But It was great to actually see some snow.
This was a wonderful idea for any person of any age. Many people that live in South Georgia, especially Valdosta, probably haven't had the experience of snow. Though, this past Saturday night Valdosta had alittle; not near enough to cover the ground though. That day it snowed in all 50 states including Hawaii. But, the idea of snow in a little kids mind is snow angels, snowball fights, snowmen, sledding, basically stuff you see on movies. So, I think that this was a wonderful idea and experince for anyone that went. It helped keep the winter spirit.
I think that it is pretty cool for them to do this for the kids. I have always wanted to know what experiencing snow would be like. I never got the chance thought. I grew up in Florida. I wish they would set up an area for kids 13 and up. I would love to throw some snowballs at targets and eat cookies! Lol
