Would you put a microchip in your dog? British dog owners may be forced to microchip their pets and take out insurance, part of a proposed crackdown on the country's dangerous canines.

The government's proposals are aimed at tackling the growing problem of aggressive canines being used to harass people. In a country where guns are tightly controlled and even carrying a kitchen knife can result in a prison sentence, animal rights experts and politicians say street thugs have turned to dangerous-looking dogs to threaten their victims.

Home Office Secretary Alan Johnson said there was "no doubt that some people breed and keep dogs for the sole purpose of intimidating others."

His proposals were largely welcomed by animal welfare groups, including the British SPCA, which said it had long supported chipping — primarily as a means of reuniting lost pets with their owners. The devices are described as "tiny microchips, about the size of a grain of rice, painlessly inserted into the back of the dog."

The chips are easily readable by scanners used by dog wardens and veterinarians.

A host of European countries — including Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Italy and Portugal — have introduced mandatory microchipping rules in the past few years, with nary a raised eyebrow. France requires that some breeds either be chipped or tattooed. Even in countries where the practice isn't required, cities such as Berlin and Prague demand that dog owners chip their pets.

I would NOT put a microchip in my dog ( not that I actually have a dog, but if I did I would not put anything in him!) I honestly don't see the point of putting a microchip in your dog, I mean why do dog wardens and veterinarians need to know to where your dog is, as for the dog threatening i don't see how putting a microchip in your dog will help that. Besides if you were going too threaten someone with there dog they wouldn't put a microchip in it.

Well, no I would never microchip my very own dog. I mean, I know why some people might do it, but still what if it is called, Animal Abuse. If I did that to my dog and she got hurt, I would never ever forgive myself. Now I know a lot of people who microchiped their dogs and a lot of them never lived it down when their dogs got seriously hurt during the operation. So thats why I would never micro chip my dog!

I think that it would be a bad idea because that would make my dog angre with me i mean if someone put a chip in my head i would be mad.

i think i would put a microchip in my dog so i can keep track him if hes ever in danger or if he ever ran away or if he was ever lost...

Every dog we get it gets lost or it gets stolen and my dad said the next dog or puppy we get we are going to microchip.

No, my dog is already trained and doesn't need a chip. But for all of the people that are trying to train there dog, and they are worried that it'll run away. I'd probably recommend this
