Get healthy. Cut out fat, sugar, salt
Michelle Obama is urging the nation's largest food companies to speed up efforts to make healthier foods and reduce marketing of unhealthy foods to children.
The first lady has talked to schools and nutrition groups across the country in her effort to reduce childhood obesity. This is the first time she has confronted the food companies that make the snacks and junk food that stuff grocery aisles and school vending machines.
Mrs. Obama's campaign is largely focused on school lunches and vending machines, along with making healthy food more available and encouraging children to exercise more.
"We need you not to just tweak around the edges but entirely rethink the products you are offering, the information that you provide about these products, and how you market those products to our children," she said.
"While decreasing fat is certainly a good thing, replacing it with sugar and salt isn't," she urged. "This needs to be a serious industrywide commitment to providing the healthier foods parents are looking for at prices they can afford."
Former President Bill Clinton, who in 2005 partnered with the American Heart Association for a similar campaign against childhood obesity, said he was thrilled that Mrs. Obama had joined the cause.
"She'll get visibility for it that I can't get. She's a lot younger than I am. She'll relate better to a lot of the kids in the schools. They'll relate better to her. I think it's a really great thing for her to do this," Clinton said, answering questions at a childhood obesity forum sponsored by Newsweek magazine. Mrs. Obama was scheduled to participate in the forum on Wednesday.
Last week, Clinton announced that an effort aimed at replacing full-calorie soft drinks with reduced-calorie, smaller-portion beverages had reduced the number of beverage calories shipped to schools by 88 percent between 2004 and 2009.

Why does Michelle Obama care sooo much about us kids? And that's up to the school district if they want to put vending machines in the cafeteria.
Food and Health: Michelle Obama is true. They do need to make more healthier foods and reduce unhealthy foods. Being healthy is important. It's bad to eat junk foods because it can make us unhealthy. I think everyone should eat healthy foods instead of junk foods.
i put salt on pretty much everything i eat, so this should be hard. i do want to help prevent childhood obesity though. I have seen any children who become gain alot of fat just from eating stuff that is pretty healthy but they eat alot of it.
Its extremely improtant to be healthy. To be healthy you have to eat healthy food and its a good thing she is encouraging peopl be healthy.
I agree with Mrs.Obama to get rid of unhealthey foods in the vending machines because kids need to eat healther because its good for them. I think that instead of having junk food in the vending machines they should have like a little bag of celery with dressing a bag with carrots and other healthy food like a fruit bar. And instide of having soda you can have water or juice in the vending machines to. And don't have candy and other unhealthy foods and drinks in the vending machines, I think that should change in schools, resturants, bowling alleys ect. I think once in a while it will be ok to have some candy, soda, chips but not so much. Eat more fruits and drink lots of water then if you are in a game or bowling alley you get hungry you can have something heallthy to eat insead of chips and candy. :)
I agree with you machelle! Its always good to stay in shape and eat healthier food . And im so glad we have a healthy lunch at our school.
I'm not the biggest fan of Michelle Obama but I agree with her when she says that kids need to put down the junk food and pick up the healthy food. I'm really glad she is taking a stand against kids eating unhealthy junk food. It is also very true when she says that people need to get fit and exercise. There are way too many overweight people all around the world and I love how Michelle is stepping up and making a difference in the world. We all need to get healthier so keep it up Michelle!
I believe Michelle Obama is doing the right thing. I have sports after school and I sometimes get snacks out of our vending machines. I wish our schools would put more healthy foods in them instead of junk food that's not healthy for you. I feel much better when I play a sport after eating a healthy snack instead of chips and candy. Children should not be obese in America.
I am not a big fan of Michelle Obama, but I appreciate the fact that she is trying to prevent obesity and trying to make kids these days healthy. Michelle Obama, continue pushing people to stay healthy and continue to do your work as the First Lady also. Go Michelle!
