No joke: Apple plans 3-D for iPhone Apple could soon be venturing into the world of 3D, after they filed a patent application for electronic spectacles that would show films on portable devices.

The head-mounted gadget would have a slot for an Apple iPhone or iPod.

The patent plans were submitted by Apple in August 2008, but were so outlandish they were dismissed as an April Fool's joke when they were published by the company on April 1.

The lens would be able to split the image into two different frames creating a 3D effect. This could be used to watch blockbusters such as Avatar and Alice in Wonderland.

The application explained the form would allow the user to "relax while viewing image based content on the head-mounted device because he does not have to hold onto the portable electronic device."

The gizmo would also be fitted with a camera to stream video from the outside world. Infrared sensors embedded in the frames would detect if anyone approached the wearer, and the real-time video would pop up on a screen inside the glasses.

This would help users feel more at ease wearing the glasses in public.

The application adds: 'Accelerometers on the head-mounted device and/or the portable electronic device can be used to detect the user's head movements.

Apple has certainly never been afraid of forging into new markets, making waves with both the iPhone and most recently with the iPad.

An Apple spokesman said the company did not comment on patents.

that would be stupid because that means that you would have to be wearing those 3D glasses every time you use the iPhone. and i would like to wear glasses all day long.

That would be cool! I have never had an iPhone or iPod, so I have no experience of having any of these iPhones or iPads, but I would like to have the 3-D for iPhone.

I don't think 3D is necessary for iphone or ipod i have an ipod and it is very entertaining without the 3D effect on it. Either way i don't think Apple would get as much sales on the new product.

That would be really cool. I think 3d TVs without glasses would be cooler. It would be cool to play games and look at apps for the Iphone in 3d.

I think i\this is pretty cool. I like how they have the glasses for the iPhone. I think with these glasses you would watch movies more clear, You would feel like you are in the movie, and you could watching great movies without somebody bothering you.

I think this is cool, but I don't like the glasses part about it. The one thing is if I wear those glasses they have to be pink.

I think a 3-D iPhone would be awesome!! But it would also be very expensive. And by the time you save enough money to get this iPhone, they will already be making a new generation! I would choose this iPhone over all others!

I think it would be pretty cool to have this, but it will be expensive. As soon as you save up and buy it, they will have the next generation of it . I don't like that.The day I bought my i pad, they said they were making the i-pad 2.
