Experts unveiled Thursday a previously unknown portrait of Leonardo da Vinci showing the artist and inventor as a middle-aged man with piercing eyes and long, flowing hair. The painting, displayed at a news conference in Rome, was discovered in December in the collection of a family from Italy's southern Basilicata region. Who made the painting and when it was done is still being investigated, but experts have ruled out it being a self-portrait.
Medieval historian Nicola Barbatelli, who found the painting, said carbon-14 analysis of the wood supporting the canvas dated the material to the late 15th or early 16th century, when Leonardo (1452-1519) was alive. However, experts cautioned that the age of the wood didn't necessarily mean the portrait was painted at that time and said more tests must be conducted.
Alessandro Vezzosi, the director of a museum dedicated to Leonardo in his hometown of Vinci, said the painting may have been made much later as it is consistent with the depiction of the artist found in a 17th-18th century portrait kept at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
The newly discovered portrait, partially damaged by scratches and measuring some 60 by 45 centimeters (24 by 18 inches), shows Leonardo wearing dark robes and a black, feathered hat.
It will be displayed along with other portraits of the artist at an exhibition in the southern town of Vaglio, in the "instep" of the boot-shaped Italian peninsula, from April 8 through Aug. 31.

It's very interesting that this painting was just now unveiled. Leonardi da Vinci's paintings are some of the most famous paintings in the world. It's incredible that one so old has just been found. The painting is probably worth millions of dollars since it was made be da Vinci. I hope it will be honored as much as da Vinci's other paintings.
I think that it is pretty amazing on how he did a self portrait of himself. I want to know where the painting was found and who found it.

I do not understand how they were able to find this painting. But it is also great to find another cultivating piece of art work from a great artist.
Leonardo da Vinci is one of my favorite artistes in history. His work show so much detail I love it. Some very show like his feelings.
I think it is him. I mean if the wood says it. I also think that yes more tests must be provided to confirm if it is a self-portrait.
For some reason I think that this is Leonardo. I mean I'm not a scientist or an expert on anything to figure out if it is or not, i just have the feeling that, that is what he would look like if he made a portrait of himself.
I am very happy that they have now fond a panting of the man behind the magci he as done the best painting in the world.But I am wondering how much we love him for his inventions or his fine art piece. We grew to love them both but what was the big thing that everyone saw in him?I think it was the inventions we still use his thing today and they are very and I mean very useful.But I like his art a bit more but now with his painting we can now find out what time the great art master mind was really born we can find out the man that he looked up to and was impressed by.A question I to this day have is what made him become a painter or a invented and a painter.Or maybe who made him want to do what he did it could have been a after a friend or himself he is the most talented art guy (my aunt is the best art woman ) thanks for reading this and bye

I've heard alot about Leonardo da Vinci in my first period art class for Mrs.Coker. In her class we learn alot about art in rome. I'm sure this painting was a self-portrait. Leonardo had many, many paintings and things he has done. I have not seen them all, but the ones i have seen are beautiful and gigantic! i would like to see them in person. I love art and would like to learn more about Leonardo.
experts found a painting of da Vinci that was found in a family collection. They don't know if it is a da Vinci self portrait or what it is but it seems to date back to da Vinci's times.It will be on display for some time before it goes to a museum. I agree that this is a very good article and is very news worthy and I hope it is a new piece of history that the world can see. I would have liked to have had more information about it in the article but I still enjoyed reading this article I hope that they will have a new article with more information on the topic.
