Dr. Seuss-like creatures found deep in ocean

Dr. Seuss-like creatures found deep in ocean The creatures living in the depths of the ocean are as weird and outlandish as the creations in a Dr. Seuss book: tentacled transparent sea cucumbers, primitive "dumbos" that flap ear-like fins, and tubeworms that feed on oil deposits.

More than 40 new species of coral were documented on deep-sea mountains, along with cities of brittlestars and anemone gardens. Nearly 500 new species ranging from single-celled creatures to large squid were charted in the abyssal plains and basins.

Also of importance were the 170 new species that get their energy from chemicals spewing from ocean-bottom vents and seeps. Among them was a family of "yeti crabs," which have silky, hairlike filaments on the legs.

More than 2,000 scientists from 80 countries are working to catalog the oceans' species.

Researching the abyss has been costly and difficult because it involved deep-towed cameras, sonar and remotely operated vehicles that cost $50,000 a day to operate, Carney said.

Once the census is complete, the plan is to publish three books: a popular survey of sea life, a second book with chapters for each working group and a third focusing on biodiversity.

NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That thing looks like something from a horror movie, if I could have one pet that thing would be it. It is amazing that the creature is alive, soooooooooooo cool!

i think that this is really cool. i believe that there are a lot of creatures down there just waiting to be discovered. and they spike my interest.

That thing looks creepy. It looks like a jelly fish and a clear pink mushroom with organs at the same time and that is creeping me out. I do not want to see that thing in real life.

That's cool a see through squid it an awesome discovery. Did this squid lived in the time of the dinosaurs.
Is this squid only on the deep ocean or those it go to the top to?

This doesn't surprise me. we only know about 7% of the ocean we know more about the moon than the ocean. But if they keep looking and care enough about the mysterious of the ocean then I'm sure much more input will come. for all we know there could be shrimps about five feet long and two feet tall. Or that crabs are the size of a car. Who knows.

Outlandish animals that seem to have come out a book, huh? That's something you wouldn't be able to see everyday. Either way, that's really cool! (:

I can not believe that there are still animals that are being discovered. The ocean is so large, that I guess if will take a lot of time and money before we find all the different species living in it. I think it would be an interesting career to discover new life forms.

That is so cool to me. I think that the animals in the world are very cool. big and small they are cool to me anyways. The animal looks like it has a eye and a lot of eyes on the said of it. I will not want to see that animal any were.Dr. Seuss is a very imaginative guy, and no ugly undersea creature is gonna take over a shape that you people think looks like his creations.

i think this artical is very interesting and fun to read and also a good way to learn new things did you know that "yeti crabs" have sliky hair like filaments on it's legs? it sounds creepy and cool at the same time.

i think it is great that people posted this becausei learend new things that i never knew like yeti crabs have silky hairlike filaments on the legs
