Citizens go bald for charity:
Some Wilsonians will be shedding their locks April 18 to raise money for childhood cancer research. It is time for the St. Baldrick's Foundation fundraiser. This year, the Fraternal Order of Leatherhead Society, an international organization of firefighters, along with some law enforcement officers and citizens, joined together to organize the event.
Jim Miller, a member of FOOLS, a shavee and Wilson firefighter, said O'Cools and The Dog House will join together in hosting the event at Brentwood Shopping Center. St. Baldrick's Foundation is one of the world's leading fundraising entities for childhood cancer research.
Several children and adults who are currently fighting the disease are scheduled to be at the event.
Michael High, a Wilson firefighter and one of the organizers, said it will begin at 4 p.m. and would not end until the last person who wants his head shaved, gets shaved.
"We really want this to be successful again this year," he said.
Not only will you be able to watch people get their heads shaved by five local barbers, three from Airport Barber Shop and two from Parkwood Barber Shop, attendees will also be able to purchase food and beverages from either restaurant, enjoy live music by Easy Street, and listen to former 96.1 FM's DJ Crash as he emcees the event.
The Easy Street band, which is being provided by The Dog House, is scheduled to begin playing around 7 p.m.
Tim Craig, manager of O'Cools, said he has been growing his hair out just to be able to participate.
"This is a great opportunity to raise money for a fantastic charity," he said. "I am glad we are able to participate, and I'm really looking forward to having my head shaved again."
Steve Raper said he is looking forward to participating in the cause as well.
Last year, approximately 70 people had their head shaved during the event, and their modest goal of $500 was shattered by more than $11,000. They hope to surpass their goal again this year.
So far, there are approximately 40 people signed up to go bald and more than $2,000 in pledges have been received. Miller said their goal this year is to raise at least $4,000.
"With the economy like it is, we will be happy to raise $4,000," he said. "Anything we can contribute to the cause is great."
Men, women or children wanting to have their head shaved are welcome to participate for a minimum donation of $50.
It is the policy of the St. Baldrick's Foundation that no razor blades are used, only hair clippers.

I think that is a very cool thing to do for someone else. Because you would want someone to do that for you if you were in that predicumant and you needed help. I know I would so thats why I think it is a very good thing to do. Also that is charity so thats my favorite thing.
