Hey girl, have you lost interest in science yet?
URI Assistant Professor Mindy Levine wants to cultivate interest in science among the 40 girls who attend the weeklong camp. She'll do that with hands-on experiments, female scientist speakers and a field trip to the Museum of Science in Boston.
Research shows girls start to lose interest in science during middle school or earlier. In 2009, only 24 percent of scientists and engineers were women, according to federal statistics.
The $15,000 grant comes from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Special Grant Program in the Chemical Sciences and will fund the camp for two years. It will be held at URI's campus in South Kingstown in April and again in 2014.
Critical thinking challenge: Do you agree with the research cited above which states that girls lose interest in science?
